“Live a Life of Experience”: A Methodological Proposal by Luigi Giussani

Abstract

The article explores the category of experience as it is proposed by Italian priest and pedagogist Luigi Giussani (1922-2005). The author analyses why and how L. Giussani took an interest in this category, and shows the methodological peculiarity of his approach to it. Furthermore, the article pays specific attention to the reason that can lead to a reduction of the Christian experience. It poses the question of the integrity of the subject as one of the conditions needed in order to experience reality. The article underlines the link between religiosity and religious education. The religious sense is considered here as an objective criterion, capable of judging reality. Giussani’s anthropological thought is here connected the anthropology of St. Augustine and other theologians. On the whole, the article shows the pedagogical values of Giussani’s views on the category of experience for contemporary Christian pedagogy.
