Abstract

In the following report a sequence is shown in the history of the evangelical movement in Russia, which consists of attempts by the leader of Russian evangelism: Ivan S. Prokhanov (1869-1935) in the years 1922-23 to implement the ideas of Reformation into circles of orthodox communities configured for the transformation of church life. These processes in Russian orthodoxy of that time period were part of a so called “renewal movement”

In the following study will be shown specific steps and actions which were undertaken by Prokhanov in order to have influence on renewal processes in Russian orthodoxy. The main focus of this study is the analysis of certain documents of programs created by Prokhanov and his circle of like minded assistants who were in the council of evangelical christians, to spread these ideas to orthodox clergy and parishioners as well. During the analysis, the ideological similarity and the reaction from the leaders of the renewal movement and the leaders of the council of evangelical christians, or baptists are studied. On the basis of the facts presented and the analysis of them, general conclusions are drawn on the nature and historical significance of the interaction of the council of evangelical christians, represented by their chairman, and the progressive orthodox innovators. In the report will be shown specific results of the attempts to implement the fundamental ideas of Reformation on Russian soil.
